The UPAAA Grand Reunion and Convention (GRC) is a biennial event designed to bring together UP alumni in North America to work towards the common goal of supporting our beloved Alma Mater in its mission to provide excellent and affordable public education to the best and the brightest minds in the Philippines. It is also an occasion for UP alumni to honor their achievers and loyal members, recapture memories of campus life at UP, renew old friendship and forge new ones. As such, the UPAAA exists to explore possibilities of strengthening the relationship between US-based alumni and UP in their mutual quest for academic excellence and national development.
We are now in the third quarter of our second year of our term 2020-2021.
This is a milestone for this organization which had undergone so much transformation since we began our term. At the start of 2020, the Covid pandemic hit and we felt a huge barrier to the way we could move our organization forward. But thanks to virtual technology, a blessing in disguise, we were able to meet virtually and build a team even when we had not actually met each other in person. Allow me to look back at what we have done so far during the past year and a half.
Our term has experienced a number of firsts: A Strategic Planning Committee chaired by Carol Colborn was formed to map our way forward by identifying strategies in line with the goals I have identified in my term and additional goals from the SWOT analysis. Strategic planning has not been fully utilized to guide our organizational strategies and this marks the start of a well-thought of plan based on input from members and board. A novel virtual fund-raising to mobilize ourselves while staying at home during the pandemic was conceived by Ways and Means chair Dr. Winston Umali. Other virtual events were held to continue our fellowship activities in collaboration with partner chapters such as UPAANJ, UPAA Arizona and UPAA San Diego.
Meanwhile, Scholarship Chair Dr. Joy Celo pursued the generation and release of our funds for stipend scholarships and named scholarship as our signature project. Our membership recruitment and retention program under Membership chair Clod Gomez and the RVP’s bore fruits. We have markedly increased our membership and will continue to increase our numbers by the end of the term. Our virtual Grand Reunion and Convention is forthcoming on October 22-24, 2021 that promises to be a unique convention chaired by the energetic Ethel Rubio in partnership with UPAA Nevada under their president Dot Tome. The election of incoming officers is underway and managed by a most dedicated team in the NOMELEC led by chair Dr. Juanita Caccam to ensure election integrity. More...
