UPAAA Members honored as Distinguished Alumni by the UP Alumni Association Francisco S. Sy, MD DrPH 2024 UPAA Lifetime Distinguished Achievement Award, in recognition of his leadership and achievements in the field of medicine.Dr. Sy is an alumnus of the UP College of Medicine, earned an MS in Tropical Public Health from Harvard University, and a Doctor of Public Health in Immunology and Infectious Diseases from Johns Hopkins University. He is Professor of Public Health and Chair of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health in University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Elmer Rico E. Mojica, PhD 2024 UPAA Distinguished Alumni Award in Science Education (Chemistry) Dr. Mojica earned his BS in Agricultural Chemistry, and MS in Agricultural Chemistry (Minor in Food Science) from UP Los Banos. He obtained a PhD in Chemistry (Analytical and Environmental Chemistry) from the State University of New York, Buffalo, NY. He is Professor of Chemistry at Pace University, NY. | Marlene Cataylo Chance, APRN, FNP-BC, PhD, EJD, FAANP 2024 UPAA Distinguished Alumni Award, Leadership in Nursing Dr. Chance obtained her Graduate in Nursing degree from UP, then a string of other degrees and certifications in the US. She is an Advanced Practice Nurse in Florida.  |

IN MEMORIAM Erlinda (Linda) Agustin Simunek, PhD, JD, RN, Esq. Dr. Simunek graduated from the University of the Philippines with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 1962, then earned other degrees in the US, She completed her PhD at Loyola University, Chicago, MSN at DePaul University, Chicago as a distinguished alumna, Juris Doctor at the University of Miami, while serving as a full-time Dean of the Florida International University School of Nursing in Miami. Through grit, persistence, skills and faith in her own abilities, she crossed barriers and succeeded in obtaining administrative positions in nursing education, always championing the nursing profession, in the US and internationally. Linda lived a very good life filled with ideas, wisdom, integrity, grace, humility, kindness, love and compassion. Her legacy of goodness and servitude will forever be honored, remembered and kept in our hearts. Chan was a pillar of the UP College of Public Health (CPH), where she graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Hygiene and eventually joined the college as a faculty member in the Department of Medical Microbiology. She completed her MS and PhD in Microbiology at the Yale University School of Medicine. She was a former dean of CPH and, upon retirement, Professor Emeritus. Dr. Chan was one of the earliest pioneers in Philippine virology and immunology, an Outstanding and Renowned Filipino Scientist, Researcher, NAST Academician, UP College of Medicine Professor. Her life was dedicated to service, education and the unwavering pursuit of improved public health outcomes. A beloved Teacher, Daughter, Sister, Grammie, Tita-Mama Veron, and Friend , she returned to our Good LORD on July 16, 2024. (Excerpts from tributes to Dr. Chan by the UPCPH and by her family.) |
