The Sablay is the official academic costume of all UP campuses, a symbol of success and years of hard work by graduates of UP. It was first introduced in 1990, officially adopted in 2000 and replaced the traditional graduation cap and toga. It is a loose sash, featuring ukkil, geometric elements and the "UP" written as a symbol based on the baybayin for U. and P. According to the UP Office of the University Registrar, the sablay should be worn only during academic functions and activities - recognition programs, commencement exercises, official photo taking and other academic activities requiring academic regalia.
The sablay comes in 3 sizes - Small, medium and large as noted in one of the images above.
